Category: Athlete

A proud member of Sweetgrass First Nation, Blair Atcheynum built an extraordinary hockey career that took him from North Battleford to the highest levels of professional hockey. After playing for the North Battleford North Stars as a teenager, Blair went on to play in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades, Swift Current Broncos and Moose Jaw Warriors.

His final WHL season was remarkable, scoring 70 goals and 68 assists for 138 points in just 71 games, earning him a place on the WHL East First All-Star Team and the WHL Most Sportsmanlike Player award.

In 1989, Blair was selected 52nd overall in the NHL Draft by the Hartford Whalers. Over a professional career spanning 12 seasons, he played 1,010 games across the NHL, AHL, ECHL and IHL, recording 367 goals, 412 assists and 779 points. Blair played 196 NHL games with the Ottawa Senators, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and Chicago Blackhawks, finishing with 27 goals and 33 assists for 60 points. He was also a two-time Calder Cup champion, winning with Springfield in 1991 and Hershey in 1997.

Beyond the numbers, Blair's greatest legacy is the example he has set for Indigenous athletes and young hockey players throughout Saskatchewan. After his playing career, he returned home and continued giving back to the game as an assistant coach with the Battlefords North Stars. His career represents not only exceptional hockey achievement, but also perseverance, pride, and the importance of representing where you come from.
