Fred Light Museum

Welcome to the Fred Light Museum, located in the historic former St. Vital School in the heart of Battleford.  As a premier destination for local history and a designated Tourist Information Centre, we invite you to explore our diverse collections and world-class exhibits.

Constructed in 1914, the building served as the St. Vital School until 1974, at which time it was gifted to the Town. In 1980, it officially opened as the Fred Light Museum, and by 1985, the building was designated as a Municipal Heritage Property.

The museum is named in honour of its founder, Fred Light, a member of a pioneer North-West Mounted Police family.  Having devoted many years to the preservation of local history, his extensive personal collection--combined with artifacts donated by the community--offers a unique and fascinating glimpse into the heritage of "Old Battleford."

The Fred Light Museum Features:

The Firearms Room

One of the most comprehensive collections of firearms in all of Western Canada, housing nearly 400 firearms.  This expansive space at the top of the building offers visitor an excellent view of the town, the National Historic Site, and the Government Site.

The School Room

Step back into the classroom of the early 20th century.  The School Room houses an authentic collection of local school desks, vintage maps, textbooks, and photographs that tell the story of education in our pioneer community.

Ye Old General Store

A favorite for visitors of all ages, this room is a meticulously crafted replica of an early General Store.  It captures the heart of community life in the past, featuring the goods, packaging, and atmosphere that once defined the local shopping experience.

The Battleford Room

Dedicated to the daily life of our region's founders, this exhibit showcases a diverse range of 19th and early 20th-century furniture and farm tools.  Visitors can also explore a unique display of vintage mailboxes and historic local firefighting equipment.

On the Museum Grounds

Beyond the halls of the historic school building, our beautifully maintained grounds offer even more to explore. Wander through our collection of specialty structure and outdoor attractions:

Anderson Woodworking

Step into a legacy of craftmanship that spans over a century.  This building showcases the enduring skills of three generations of Andersens--father, son Chris, and grandson Floyd.  While the structure was built in 2016, it serves as a bridge to the past, housing a vast array of woodworking and construction tools and honouring a local business tradition that dates back to the late 19th century.

The 1905 Fire Hall

A faithful replica of a 1905 fire station, this building houses three of Battleford's original fire trucks.  These impressive machines have been meticulously restored and remain in fully operational, driving condition.

Eagle Hills Blacksmith Shop

Step into the heat of the forge in our working blacksmith shop.  This exhibit features a comprehensive display of traditional smithing tools, preserving the art and craft of the pioneer era.

Lighthouse Service Station

A nostalgic tribute to local history, this replica of F.G. Light's original service station is a must-see for automotive enthusiasts.  It houses Mr. Light's own 1953 Chevrolet tow truck alongside a stunning 1927 Whippet two-door coach.
