Having a Backyard Fire? Get Approved in 3 Easy Steps!

Before you light your outdoor fire pit, fireplace, or appliance for the first time, the Town of Battleford requires a safety inspection and a permit.  Permits are 100% free, and they ensure your setup is safe for you and your neighbours.

1. Check the Rules & Prepare Your Space

Ensure your outdoor appliance complies with Town Bylaws before submitting your request.

  • Must be located on private property at least 3 meters away from property lines, buildings, or decks.
  • Must sit on a non-combustible surface (like stone, concrete, or gravel) separated from grass.
  • Must have a heavy-gauge metal screen cover with openings no larger than 13 mm to stop flying embers.

2. Complete the Paper Application

The permit application must be completed on paper. You can get the form in one of two ways:

  • Download and print the permit application.
  • Pick up a physical copy at Town Hall.

Fill out the form completely.  You can drop if off at Town Hall, or take a clear photo/scan to submit it digitally.

3.  Request Your Inspection & Upload Your Permit

Your setup must be inspected and approved by the Battleford Fire Department before you use it for the first time.

To book this, open the Fire Inspection Form and attach your photo/scan.  (If you chose to drop your paper permit off at Town Hall instead, staff will handle this step for you).  The Fire Department will contact you to schedule your inspection.  Once they sign off, your free permit is legally active!

🏡 Inherited a Fire Pit?

Moved into a new home that already has an outdoor fire appliance? Do not assume it is approved! You are legally responsible for its compliance. Please call the Fire Department at (306) 937-6208 to check our registry and verify your property's safety status.
