WINTER WATER RUN

Preventing Frozen Water Lines in Your Home

During the winter months, some residents with shallow water lines may be at risk of their pipes freezing.  To prevent this, the Town of Battleford implements a Winter Water Run.

Who is Affected?

The Utility Department will notify you directly if your property is required to participate in this program.  This applies to residents with shallow laterals or a history of frozen lines.  If you are not notified, do not start running your water and contact Utility Department.

How the Program Works

If your home is selected for winter water run, you will be required to run a continuous, steady stream of water to prevent your line from freezing.

  • How much water? Run a 1/4-inch stream of water, approximately the size of a pencil.
  • How long?  You must keep the water running continuously until Town personnel notifies you that the program has ended and the frost is out of the ground.
  • Water temperature check: Our personnel will be out visiting homes on the program to check the temperature of your water.  This helps us know when to start and end the program.  If you are not home a notice will be left to contact Utilities Department.

Important Billing Information

We understand that running water for an extended period can be a concern.  The Town has a process in place to ensure you are not overcharged.  The Town will notify you first.  Do not turn on your water before you are officially notified and have signed a waiver.  Turning your water on before being notified will result in additional charges on your bill.

Your bill will be adjusted.  The Town will take a meter reading at the start and end of the program and calculate an adjustment.  This credit will be applied to your utility bill after the program is complete.

If you have concerns of pipes freezing, contact Utilities Department at 306-937-6220.
